Signalling Equipment Restoration Team

Scope

This visit is to the Signalling Equipment Restoration Team at LT Museums' Depot. The Team of volunteers are working to restore some of the more traditional items of LT signalling equipment.

The main items currently being worked on are a ‘B’ style power frame, an ‘N’ style power frame and an ‘N’ style push/pull power frame. Other items are a ‘V’ style interlocking frame now operating under EP push button control, two internally illuminated train describer signs, plus some ancillary items.

Steve's summertime talk

The Society's Annual General Meeting will be followed by a talk on the Evolution of the European Train Control System (ETCS). The Digital Railway initiative is undertaking the deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System across the UK network in the coming decades. Since the start of the Cambrian project in 2006, the industry has made great steps in refining ETCS technology and understanding its deployment.

The IRSE and Professional Development

Maintaining and developing your competence through continuing professional development (CPD) is important at all stages of your career, to ensure that you remain competent and employable and to protect the safety of all those who use and work on railways worldwide. It is appropriate for all professional engineers and technicians, wherever they live in the world. The IRSE expects all members to maintain their own competence and help others to do so.

Greenwich Power Station

Scope

Greenwich Power Station is London Underground’s single remaining source of non-National Grid electricity. It is used as a standby power station available as a back-up electricity supply for the London Underground. Originally a coal-fired power station, Greenwich was built between 1902 and 1910 in order to supply electricity to the London Tram Network. Today electricity is generated by eight Rolls Royce Avon gas turbine engines which were installed between 1967 and 1972.

The Millennium Transit

Talk synopsis

The Millennium Transit is a guided bus link to the Millennium Dome that uses an automated control system and guideway technology embedded in the road. It is similar to that used by emergency vehicles in the Channel Tunnel. The presentation gave an overview of the project and explained the technology used.

Olympics

Talk synopsis

On 27th July 2012 the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the 30th Olympiad will be held in London. Over the following sixteen days of competition approximately 7.7 million spectators are expected to attend the events at the 33 different competition venues.

The Olympic Games will be followed two weeks later by the Paralympic Games, which, whilst being roughly one-third the scale of the Olympic Games, is also one of the world’s largest sporting events.
